What Do You Teach Your Children About Money?
By By Kimberly Chastain , MS, LMFT, Fri Dec 9th

Whether we realize it or not we teach our children about moneyevery day. Sometimes we teach with words and sometimes withactions. I’m sure at one time or another the following scenarioas happened to you or something close to it: “Mom, can we go buysome toys?” You say, “We don’t have the money for that rightnow.” Your children reply, “Just go to the ATM and get themoney.” You then make a comment to the effect, “There has to bemoney in my account in order to get money from the ATM.” I stillremember the first time I had that conversation and mychildren’s jaws dropped. It never occurred to them that you hadto have money in order to get money out of the ATM machine. Theyjust saw the ATM as the cash machine – Free money. Don’t we allwish that was true!

Let me share with you another conversation we had in my house. We were giving out allowances and we always give it to them inchange, so they can take their offering to church. My son said,“Why, do we give money to church anyway?” My daughter quicklypiped up, “Because, the Bible tells us to.” She is accurate thatthe Bible instructs us to give to church, but there is a betterexplanation. (For the record, I don’t like using because theBible says so – we need to teach our children about the reasonsGod gives us instructions and his promises in the Bible.) Wegive money to church, because God owns everything anyway. Allthat we have has been given to us from Him and he owns it all.We are only giving a small portion back to thank Him for thebounty he has given us. So, we give the church a praise offeringfor what God has graciously given us.

Many people have different views about money. Some don’t want totell their children anything about how much they make and howthey pay bills. They don’t want their children to know that andsee that as private. Some people give their children way toomuch information and then children

Iran's Secret Weapon
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, expects to conquer and rule the world with a secret weapon. No, it’s not a nuclear device, but a Messiah emerging out of a well. Ahmadinejad is mocked by Tehran’s elite “for his ugliness, stupidity….” Yet it is his religiosity that gives him the common touch with the masses that worries them.
In This Great Republic
For decades, America has been the most remarkable and prosperous country of the world due to the billions of dollars for investment in capital, the growth in new housing starts and the great demand for new products to improve the conditions of life. But the height of this prosperity is passing, and we are now on the downward slope.
God's Election
The promise of "Change" has been the slogan most associated with the US primary elections this year. The entire battleground for the nomination to the presidency has been unprecedented. However, all of these election issues pale in significance to yet another election which has been in process for almost 2000 years: God's Elections. His elections will bring the greatest change—a change all peoples have ever longed for.

worry if things are tight. Ithink there is a middle ground. How are children going to learnto spend money wisely if we don’t show them? I think it isimportant for you to share with children how things were in thelean years of your family. That maybe right now. Many childrentoday, when they become adults, want to start out where theirparents ended up. They don’t see all the difficult times thatled up to where their parents are now. Share with your childrenin age appropriate ways how to spend and save money. Teach yourchildren how to compare prices and shop for a bargain. I haveseen many teenagers over the years and I’m amazed at when theystart spending their own money for clothing all the suddenWal-Mart doesn’t look so bad anymore, instead of the high pricedstores they want parents to spend their money.

In conclusion, what and how are you teaching your children aboutmoney? Do they know that God is in control? Do they see yougiving to church? Do they even know how bills are paid? Maybeyou are saying, “I have been a poor manager of money, who am Ito teach them?” We are all learning and God is gracious to helpus when we make mistakes. He can help you know what to say andhow to teach your children about money. Ask God to help youmanage your money wisely and set a good example for yourchildren.
